AWS AI certifications can look deceptively similar when you scan their product lists. Both AWS Certified AI Practitioner (AIF-C01) and AWS Certified Generative AI Developer – Professional (AIP-C01) discuss foundation models, responsible AI, Amazon Bedrock and the practical use of generated outputs. But familiarity with the vocabulary of generative AI is not the same as being accountable for a production system that retrieves private documents, calls APIs, incurs model costs and has to survive deployment failures.
If your work has moved from discussing AI opportunities to building applications, the AWS Certified Generative AI Developer – Professional AIP-C01 exam may be the better target. If you are still developing the basic language of AI and the ability to recognize appropriate business use cases, AWS Certified AI Practitioner AIF-C01 remains useful. Choosing well means comparing responsibilities, not assuming that a higher-level badge is universally more valuable.
The difference in one table
| Question | AIF-C01: AI Practitioner | AIP-C01: GenAI Developer – Professional |
|---|---|---|
| What is the role? | Understand AI concepts, uses, benefits, limitations and responsible adoption | Implement and operate production GenAI applications integrated with AWS services |
| What is the expected depth? | Foundational recognition and scenario judgment | Professional engineering design, integration, evaluation and operational troubleshooting |
| What does a Bedrock scenario ask? | When a managed foundation-model platform is relevant | How to select, secure, invoke, test, monitor and optimize the model-backed application |
| What does an agent scenario ask? | What an agent is and why tool permissions matter | How tool contracts, authorization, retries, idempotency and traces make actions dependable |
| What should you be able to produce? | A sound explanation of an AI use case and its risks | A deployment design, proof of operation, evaluation plan and incident response |
The Professional exam assumes more experience, but neither certification is an official prerequisite for the other. AWS explicitly says no prior certificate is required to attempt AIP-C01. Treat AIF-C01 as one possible foundation, not as a mandatory toll gate.
AIF-C01: recognize the right problem and the responsible use of AI
AI Practitioner is a sensible starting point for professionals who need to evaluate AI opportunities, discuss solutions with technical teams, or understand how data, models, prompts and governance shape business results. Its scope is not confined to chatbots. Foundational candidates should be able to distinguish AI from machine learning and generative AI, recognize common use cases, and understand benefits and limitations without designing the entire implementation.
For example, imagine a manager evaluating a proposed service-desk assistant. An AIF-C01-level discussion should identify that a generative model can summarize support requests, that grounding may reduce unsupported answers, that user privacy matters and that human oversight may be needed for sensitive decisions. The same person should be able to recognize when a conventional deterministic workflow would be a safer or less expensive solution.
A solid grasp of AI Practitioner foundations helps learners connect service vocabulary to problem types instead of memorizing a loose catalog of tools.
AIP-C01: make the entire application work
AIP-C01 is a Professional-level engineering certification for a developer implementing generative AI in applications and business workflows. AWS targets people with experience creating production-grade applications and roughly a year of hands-on GenAI implementation. The exam’s task statements cover foundation-model integration, data preparation and retrieval, agentic workflows, API integration, security, governance, cost, evaluation and troubleshooting.
Take the same service-desk assistant. The AIP-C01 developer needs to decide where policy documents are stored, how embeddings and a vector store are maintained, which user identity is applied during retrieval, how the model is called, and how to detect an answer based on an outdated policy. If the assistant can create or modify a ticket, the application must validate the tool’s arguments, authorize the action, avoid duplicate writes after timeouts and log enough evidence for support teams to reconstruct a failure.
That is why the difference is not merely the number of AWS services you know. It is the ability to defend a production boundary. A design that looks impressive in a demo may still be unsuitable if it cannot handle cost spikes, secrets exposure, prompt injection, service throttling or failed deployments. Those outcomes depend on AIP-C01 architecture trade-offs involving system cost, reliability, security and operational complexity.
Compare the same application through both lenses
Example one: choosing a foundation model
An AIF-C01 candidate should know that foundation models differ in capability, latency, cost and suitability for tasks such as summarization and text generation. An AIP-C01 candidate should be ready to design a measurable selection process: representative evaluation cases, supported Regions, model quotas, fallback behavior, output constraints and operational pricing. They should consider whether a smaller model can satisfy requirements reliably enough to reduce cost without increasing retries or human rework.
Example two: grounding with business documents
AI Practitioner covers why retrieving current information can improve an answer and why governance remains important. AIP-C01 goes deeper: chunking strategy, embeddings, hybrid search, query transformation, permissions, index synchronization, relevance evaluation and source-version control. The developer should be able to isolate a retrieval problem from a prompting or inference problem, not automatically upgrade the model whenever an answer is wrong.
For AIP-C01, prompting and grounding depend on evidence, permissions and prompt lifecycle. A candidate for the Professional exam should be comfortable turning that discussion into an observable, testable pipeline.
Example three: building an AI agent
At the foundational level, explain that agents can invoke tools and therefore need limits on what they may do. At the Professional level, design the contracts: narrow tool schemas, IAM boundaries, human approval, request validation, safe retries, rollback or compensation, workflow timeouts, and metrics that measure task completion rather than only conversational quality.
Suppose an agent calls a refund API and the network connection breaks after the refund succeeds. AIP-C01-level reasoning identifies that blindly retrying could duplicate the refund. The right approach involves a transaction-safe idempotency key in the downstream service, a way to query the operation’s state, and an explicit recovery path. A prompt telling the model to avoid duplicates does not enforce transaction correctness. Understanding agent and tool integration helps make authorization, retries and downstream action outcomes dependable.
Where does AWS Machine Learning Engineer fit?
There is a third nearby route, AWS Certified Machine Learning Engineer – Associate, but it is not interchangeable with either exam. Its core role is operationalizing machine learning workloads, which can include data preparation, model deployment, MLOps and, in the newer version, more generative and agentic AI engineering. AIP-C01 is concentrated on integrating foundation models into production applications; ML engineering may include a broader lifecycle for traditional and generative models.
Version timing matters in October 2026. AWS ended the English MLA-C01 exam on September 28, 2026 and began delivering the English-language MLA-C02 beta on September 29. MLA-C01 remains available in Japanese, Korean and Simplified Chinese during the transition. The announced general-availability date for the updated exam is January 14, 2027. Check the current AWS certification site before choosing a machine-learning exam code or purchasing language-specific preparation materials. An old MLA-C01 study plan should not automatically be presented as the live English exam.
This distinction also helps clarify AIP-C01’s scope. Developing brand-new models and advanced machine-learning algorithms are not its primary candidate tasks. Choosing the best pre-existing foundation model, integrating retrieval and securing a working GenAI application are closer to its center of gravity.
Which certification should you take first?
Choose AIF-C01 when your current responsibilities involve identifying AI use cases, explaining responsible AI considerations, planning adoption, or learning the concepts behind Bedrock and generative models. You want to build enough foundation to communicate accurately before committing to an engineering-heavy track.
Choose AIP-C01 when you already build APIs and deployed applications, understand IAM and AWS cloud basics, and have implemented enough GenAI functionality to recognize the difference between a successful response and a reliable system. You should be willing to practice retrieval quality, agent tool execution, performance trade-offs and failure diagnosis in real or realistic AWS environments.
Choose an ML engineering path when your day-to-day role includes deploying, maintaining and monitoring machine-learning workloads beyond a GenAI application’s integration surface. Follow the current MLA-C02 transition details instead of studying against a retired English-language objective set.
There is no prescribed universal sequence. A backend developer who already understands AWS infrastructure and Bedrock could study directly for AIP-C01. A business analyst might benefit from AIF-C01 even without plans to write AI application code. An ML engineer may prioritize the role-specific Associate exam before considering the Professional GenAI credential.
What a realistic AIP-C01 preparation path looks like
Start by comparing your experience against the AIP-C01 official blueprint rather than registering by instinct. The exam assigns 31% to foundation-model integration and data management, 26% to implementation, 20% to safety and security, 12% to operations, and 11% to testing and troubleshooting. In other words, the role is both about building and about proving that the built system remains useful, safe and supportable.
Create a small application that answers from controlled documents and invokes one narrow business tool. Add tests for stale policies, missing permissions, prompt manipulation, duplicate actions, model throttling and rising token costs. Explain which component is authoritative at each step. If you can only build the happy path, you are probably still preparing for the implementation judgment in AIP-C01. The AIP-C01 six-week study plan organizes that work into a six-week sequence with measurable outcomes.
Exam logistics should influence preparation, not make the decision
For AIP-C01, AWS currently lists a 180-minute Professional exam with 75 multiple-choice or multiple-response questions, US$300 base pricing, and a passing scaled score of 750. Of the 75 questions, 65 count toward your score and 10 are unscored. No prior AWS certification is required. These details matter for scheduling, budget and timed practice, but the stronger deciding factor is whether your working role matches the assessed responsibilities.
AIF-C01 has its own foundational format, pricing and syllabus; use its official AWS page rather than assuming that a more advanced exam has the same arrangements. At any level, the relevant certification site is the authority for languages, fees in your region, accommodations and current scheduling.
Make the choice using evidence from your work
Pick your most recent AI project and write down what you personally owned. If you identified an appropriate business use case and explained its risks, AI Practitioner may fit. If you implemented the prompt, retrieval, model API, tool contract, IAM controls, deployment, evaluations and runbooks, AIP-C01 is much closer to your daily responsibilities. If you built the training and operational infrastructure around a broader ML workload, investigate the current ML Engineer path.
Certification is most useful when it names capabilities that colleagues already rely on you to exercise. The right next exam is therefore the one that stretches your actual responsibilities without asking you to skip the foundations on which those responsibilities depend.
